Thanks Collin Rusk for sharing your thoughts. Yes, we do love to guess, hope and wish. But what is even worse is when we happily convince ourselves of certain stories after biasing the estimates in order to reinforce our assumptions and/or what we want to believe.
I agree with your point about time spent gaining knowledge. However, the reality is that we need both the business and developers to see the value in that as well in order for them to advocate the same. I believe part of the problem is that our behaviours demonstrate that there is risk involved with developing software but our actions don’t quite follow through. One of our biggest challenges is being able to convince the business and developers of the potential damage or risk of not taking the extra time or steps. I’m actually working on a few things in this space with a few others on this though:)
